This vole was probably very relieved to find the apple that I left on the log pile just outside its burrow. Its normal diet of green leaves and grass stems is difficult to find during winter so I'm sure this apple provided a fulfilling source of nutrition. The field vole has been one of my favourite animals to observe so far this winter, its consistent daily routine and resilient solo lifestyle seems to be effective as it powers through the winter!

These two photos seem to sum up how a lot of local animals are acting at this time of the year. Food is relatively sparse so this squirrel is making the most of an apple it has found.
